San Salvador ESA - The 12th Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships gets underway on Friday with the attendance of over 100 athletes aged 10-13 years from 15 countries.
The youngest kids (10-11) will compete in the Pentathlon, comprising 60m, High Jump, Long Jump and Shot Put over two days, following a points table. In the final event, girls will run 800m and boys 1.000m.
In the second category (12-13), the hurdles are added with the girls running 60m and the boys 80m. The distance of the middle distance event is increased to 1.000m and 1.200m for girls and boys, respectively.
All kids will run the 4x100m relay with the 12-13 year old athletes running mixed.
The nations represented are El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Anguilla, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, the US Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, The Dominican Republic and Trinidad & Tobago.
The Central American and Caribbean Age Group Championships started in the Netherland Antilles in 1985 and has witnessed the international debut of many future stars of the region such as Olympic and World medallist Debbie Ferguson of the Bahamas and 2003 World 100m champion Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis.
The 12th edition will be held July 7-8 at the Flor Blanca Stadium, the venue of the 2002 Central American and Caribbean Games.
One week later, El Salvador will host the inaugural NACAC Senior Championships, July 13-15.
